FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Date: May 15, 2024
On Saturday, June 22, 2024, Refuge Way of the Cross will host the 2nd annual Community Day. This outdoor event will take place at 4301 Old York Road. This event is intended to continue community building by providing an afternoon of free food, vendors, and entertainment for the entire family. This event will begin at 10:00 am and continue until the late afternoon.
Sponsored by Refuge WOTCC, this event is free to attend. The goal is to encourage community members to come out to fellowship and engage. In addition to free food, there will also be charitable giveaways such as gently worn clothes, newly packaged toiletry items, and activities for kids of all ages.
“We want people to know that Refuge is for the community and not just a church in the community. It is important that we (Refuge) take charge in bringing people together,” Bishop Troy Barnett.
The Community Day is also a vending opportunity for small businesses and entrepreneurs to display their products or services. Vending inquiries can be sent to refugewotc@yahoo.com. A single payment of $25 can secure a table for the event.
Last year, Refuge held its first iteration of Community Day. Families including kids of all ages came out to enjoy face painting, other activities, and food. This year hopes to yield a larger turnout with more opportunities for entrepreneurs to introduce their businesses to new audiences. This event is significant because it serves as an opportunity for a community to see engagement and connect with Refuge- a long-time staple to the Penn Lucy and Wilson Park area. An area that is often synonymous with violence but this event is intended to reverse that narrative.

Refuge Way of the Cross Church of Christ (www.refugewotcc.net) was founded in 1958 by Apostle Leroy H. Cannady. The church has been in the Wilson Park and Govan Community since 1970. The vision of the ministry is to support the community
through spiritual needs by preaching and teaching the gospel of Jesus Christ through outreach, mentorship, and fellowship. We are in the process of expanding our facility to further meet the varying and ever-changing needs of the community we call home.
